How to Turn a Voice Memo into an iPhone Ringtone in iOS 16

To get started on the right note, let’s sort out the confusion and also answer some fundamental questions for a clear understanding!

Important Things to Know Before We Begin

Now, before we move on to the method of converting voice memos into iPhone ringtones on iOS 16, there are a few key things that you should know.

Firstly, there is no official way to set a voice memo as a ringtone on iPhones. Apple does not offer this kind of feature as the Cupertino giant wants its users to buy their ringtones from the iTunes Store. So, the method we have here is a simple workaround that you can use to convert voice memos into iPhone ringtones. Secondly, it is worth mentioning that you will be needing Apple’s GarageBand for this method. So, if you do not have it installed on your device already, get it right now from the App Store. Do keep in mind that it is a pretty big application, and hence, you need sufficient storage on your iPhone to download and install GarageBand. Another important point that you should know is that with this method, you will be limited to a 40-second ringtone. Anything in the voice memo over the 40-second mark will be automatically removed from it and the final ringtone will adhere to this time limit. Moreover, for text tone, the time limit is 30 seconds. So, if your custom recording is between 30 and 40 seconds, it will only be available as a standard ringtone and not as a text tone. Hence, it is recommended you choose a voice memo that is under 40 seconds to set it as a ringtone on your iPhone. If you intend to set the tone as your text tone, keep it under the 30-second mark.

Now, with these out of the way, let us take a look at how you can turn your recorded voice memos into iPhone ringtones easily.

Turn Voice Memos into Ringtones on iPhone

Below, you can find a step-by-step guide to help you convert voice memos on your iPhone into ringtones. Be sure to follow the steps as they are and if stuck, refer to the attached screenshots.

  1. On your iPhone, open the Voice Memos app.

  2. You can either record a new voice clip or use the ones that you previously recorded.

  3. Here, tap the voice that you want to set as a ringtone on your device to expand it.

  4. Tap the three-dots-in-a-circle button at the top right corner of the recording to open the context menu for it.

  5. Swipe up the context menu to reveal more options and tap the Save to Files option.

  6. Select the location/ folder in your iCloud Drive in which you want to save your voice memo and tap the Save button. After you save it, you will be able to access the recording within the Files app on your iPhone. Now, that you have exported your selected voice memo to the Files app, it is time to use GarageBand and convert the voice recording into a ringtone for your iPhone.

  7. So, close the Voice Memo app and open the GarageBand app on your iPhone.

  8. Choose an instrument from the GarageBand carousel to start the process. The instrument that you choose is irrelevant to this method, so, you can choose any instrument from the selection page.

  9. After opening the instrument of your choice, tap the Project button at the top menu bar (screenshot below).

  10. On the project page, tap the loop button at the top-right (screenshot below). This will bring up a context menu with three tabs at the top.

  11. Choose the Files tab and tap the Browse items from the Files app button below.

  12. Here, you will find the voice memo that you saved to Files. Tap it to export it to the GarageBand app.

  13. Now, long press the exported file and drag it to bring it to the GarageBand track editor. One thing to note here is that you will not be able to place the recording on the first track line as it is already reserved for the instrument that you chose.

  14. So, place your voice memo on the second track and the track will be automatically marked with the voice memo icon.

  15. Now, tap and drag the ends of your voice memo to adjust the length to your preference. Remember to keep it under 40 seconds.

  16. You can also tap the Play button above to play the recording, if necessary. We’d also suggest you turn off the automatic metronome by tapping the dedicated button at the top (screenshot below).

  17. When you are happy with your recording, tap the down-arrow button located at the top-left corner and tap the My Songs option.

  18. Your Garageband project will be saved to the GarageBand Recents folder as My Song [numerical].

  19. Long-press on the file to bring up the context menu for it and tap the Share option.

  20. Now, tap the “Ringtone” option in the middle to convert your voice recording into a custom ringtone for your iPhone.

  21. Name the ringtone as your preference and tap the Export button at the top-right.

  22. Following the export, tap the Use sound as… button.

  23. Here, you can either set the voice memo as your standard ringtone or standard text tone or assign it to a specific contact.

  24. If you set it as a Standard Ringtone, you will find the voice memo is set as your default iPhone ringtone in ringtone Settings. I have set it as a Standard ringtone in this case. So this way, you can easily convert a voice memo into a custom ringtone for your iPhone. We agree that there are a lot of steps to cover for such a simple task. But again, it is the cost of using an iPhone and not an Android device. However, the good thing is that once you create a ringtone out of your voice memo, it will remain in your iPhone ringtone library forever. Even if you change the ringtone to some other audio, you can always come back to the Ringtone Settings page on your device to find your custom voice memo ringtone listed along with your other ones.
